Portuguese architectural practice “SAMI” worked for a holiday residence with a historical ruin on the Pico Island of the Azores. They created a place of retreat that offers spatial qualities and impressive views towards the sea.
The two founders of the studio, Ines Vieira da Silva and Miguel Vieira, and their entourage, have carefully worked with a ruin on the construction site for a summer house. This ruin was also the starting point of the creative development of this house whereby the old masonry was kept only in the exterior.
The volume itself fits the ruin’s cubature and also the inner structure.
Wide windows allow the deep entrance of light and spectacular views towards the sea and the rooftops of the neighbors homes. The relationships between inside and outside, new and old, rough and smooth materials are the significant aspects of this residence.
SAMI Arquitectos was recommended in 2007 by another considerable architectural office named “Herzog & de Meuron” for the short list of 100 young architects of around the world for the project “Villa Ordos” in China.
