“DETROIT SWITCH BACK TO CITY” DIRECTED BY ERIK MADIGAN HECK

The photographer and director Erik Madigan Heck let some revellers dancing in a white cube he had installed at Brooklyn’s most vibrant club just behind the dancefloor and captured them shaking to Mike Dehnert’s tech house classic “Detroit Switch Back to City”. A homage to Rineke Dijkstra’s video art she made back in the 90′s.

The Dutch video artist Rineke Dijkstra captured revellers at “Mysteryworld” of Zaandam, Netherlands and “The Buzz Club” in Liverpool, England. Displacing club-goers by taking them out of their context, the dance floor, and photographing them in a white cube. Erik Madigan Heck was impressed by this piece of stunning artwork and reinterpret it in Brooklyn.

Heck explains: “Dijkstra’s project was one of the first contemporary works of art I saw in high school,” says Heck, who reveals the polarizing nature of the club environment as a space for exhibitionism as well as anonymity. “I saw it at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and stared at it for hours just watching the people.”
