South Korean artist Sungsoo Kim impresses the viewer through his nearly realistic paintings with an overstated vividness and bold, saturated colors. This series, titled “melancholy”, shows various sombre characters whose eyes are testament to a certain depth of character.
After graduating from the “Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Dijon” in Dijon, France in 2002, the 1969-born artist refined his realistic paintings with a propensity to Surrealism and Pop Art.
The sharp-edged outlines of the faces he drew are in a strong contrast to the monochrome background and let the image look nearly comic-like. Through the direct eye contact of the portraits to the beholder, you can connect with the figures and a non-verbal dialogue starts.
Some beautiful work by Seoul-based Kim…
